Todavía probando este monstruo de lente, el Nikor 55-300mm VR. Si bien me gusta la óptica de este lente, una de sus características es cierta “suavidad” a grandes distancias focales. Si bien la mayoría buscamos más contraste y nitidez, esta característica ofrece inmensas posibilidades en el post proceso. // Still trying out the Nikor 55-300mm VR lense. Even though I like the optics, one of the characteristic of this lense is it “softness” at large focal distances. Although most of us aim for more contrast and sharpness, this softness gives the oportunity of many creative ways for delivering in the post process.

Fotos del jueves 22 de diciembre de 2011, en el cual estudiantes planeaban marchar desde Plaza Italia hacia Los Heroes por la Alameda. Intento que fue inmediatamente disuelto por fuerzas especiales de Carabineros, cercando plaza Italia y el frontis del Teatro de la Universidad de Chile.
Finalizada esta concurrencia, grupos aislados se trasladaron por el Parque Bustamante hacia el sur, entre Santa ISabel e Irarrázabal, enfrentándose a ratos con Carabineros.
Finalmente no se pudo culminar con toda la fuerza necesaria este año de marchas y movilizaciones estudiantiles.

Photos from past Thursday, December 22, 2011, in which students planned to march from Plaza Italia to “Los Heroes” of the Alameda.
This attempt was immediately dissolved by special police forces, encircling Plaza Italia and the front of the Universidad de Chile theater.
Once this reunion was disolved, isolated groups went of to “Parque Bustamante” moving south, between Santa Isabel and Irarrázabal, clashing at times with the police.
At the end it wasn’t possible to finish this year with the full strenght neccesary to keep the students demands and this citizenship movement on the mind of the people, adding expectation to the way this still-going movement will develop from here to the future.

The three photos in this post are a statement. A statement, say, a principle more than anything. A would-be reminder of the constant path of mistakes that one take before one can acomplish something remotely good.
What does a photo of two garbage man in their daily routine has to do with mistakes and self-deprecation?
Well, because you can barely see them. Because there’s no detail of the situation, no context, no faces, no nothing. Because in the rush of taking this pictures I forgot about the light and forgot how to use my freaking camera.

And the moment is gone. Underexposed forever. Sure, you can go to Lightroom and brighten the hell out of your photos (like in this case) but the quality will suck. Period.
Maybe because of the time I’m typing this, I’m being way too negative, but regardless of the tone, the lesson stands:
Know your gear, be ready and don’t forget about the light!
Specially if you are just strolling through the city. There’s always situations happening, people doing interesting stuff in front of you and moments you don’t wanna miss. This is particulary true the moment you pull out a DSLR camera. Being kinda big and menacing, people inmediatly asume you’re a pro of some sort and will pose for you.
I salvaged this photos in this gross manner jsut because I liked the attitude of this two workers and I didn’t want this moments to be lost.
Damn. They could’ve been great photos.

Es inevitable la auto-crítica en cualquier foto que saco.
En este caso, a pesar de que había iluminación profesional con luces de diferente tamaño, color, y posición, el tema pasaba más por lograr una buena ubicación que permitiera sacar todo el provecho de la situación.

Cinco fotos de una rutina que tomé hace poco: el fino arte de hacer mal café.
Utilizando una simple cafetera, se agrega café molido y en este caso un poco de té verde también.
La verdad el café quedó pesimo, pero el color siempre es atractivo a la vista, con tonos que van desde el rojo al amarillo y un intenso negro al centro.
Por esto es que también utilicé una simple herramienta de Photoshop, que es el manejo de layers o capas, las cuales me permitieron en primer lugar separar y luego hacer una desaturación selectiva de los elementos fuera del café, como la cafetera, taza y el mesón. Aunque estos ya eran de tonos grises, al desaturarlos permiten realzar más aún los tonos del café.

Five photos of a routine that I took recently: the fine art of making bad coffee.
Using a simple coffee maker, add coffee grounds and, in this case, also some green tea. To be honest, the coffee tasted awful, but the color is always pleasing to the eye, with shades ranging from red to yellow and and intense black in the center.
That is why I also used a simple Photoshop tool, which is the management of layers, which allowed me to separate some stuff and then do a selective desaturation of the elements outside the cafe, as the kettle and the inn. Although these were already gray, the desaturation allowed further enhancement of the coffee tones.

Siendo chileno y de una región distinta a la Metropolitana y sus alrededores, siempre estuve condenado a ver como, en contadas ocasiones, artistas de fuste internacional, pasaban por Chile, dejaban una nota de un minuto en el noticiario de turno, tocaban y luego se iban a sus respectivos países o a tocar a otras latitudes.
Especialmente en cuanto a rock se trata, recuerdo pocas visitas de las bandas o solistas con las que uno creció escuchando y disfrutando. Y Santiago era lo mismo como si estuvieran tocando en Finlandia: nunca los iba a ver viviendo en Chuquicamata, a 2000kms de distancia.
Bastante tiempo ha pasado desde este escenario. No solo por vivir actualmente en Santiago, si no por la oferta explosiva que ha experimentado Chile en cuanto a recitales de grandes bandas se trata. Oferta que ha recibido con creces respuesta en la demanda de chilenos emocionados Leer más…
